Elon Musk Reveals Neuralink Prototype (in Pigs)
Neuralink sits on top of the head and links to the brain through tiny wires (or threads). The prototype that Musk revealed was a read-only prototype, meaning it could read brainwaves but not write to the brain. Note that future iterations are planning to be two-way devices that communicate with your phone. For now, prototypes are using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to pull this off. Future implications could be storing and replaying memories on demand. Seem like an episode of Black Mirror? Musk himself acknowledged this, saying, “I guess they’re pretty good at predicting.”😳 <<Read More>>
Amazon’s Prime Air Gets FAA Approval for Drone Use in Commercial Trials
Don’t worry, Prime Air’s drone fleet isn’t as frightening to read about as Neuralink (unless maybe you’ve seen E.D.I.T.H in Spiderman: Far From Home). To be clear, Amazon did not get approval for consumer deliveries, but they will be able to start conducting tests with their drones, bringing them a step closer to being able to drop off that journal we ordered in under two hours. <<Read More>>
U.S. Auctioning Key Mid-Band Spectrum for Commercial Use
Early this month, the U.S. announced that it will be freeing up 100MHZ of mid-band spectrum for commercial 5G use. Previously, the U.S. had been reserving those 100 MHZ for official government use (think military activity). This piece of the 5G spectrum is key to providing fast, but widespread 5G to locations across the U.S. For more on why that’s the case, read this in-depth article on the different bands of 5G (Low, Mid, and High). They go into detail that we can’t squeeze into this newsletter. Overall, this move by the Gov represents a shift to providing commercial access to 5G, meaning more and more Americans will continue to have access to the technology that President Trump calls “a vital link to America’s prosperity and national security in the 21st century”. <<Read More>>
